How valuable is ICM (Independent Chip Model) to tournament players? For starters, it's so powerful that Poker Stars doesn't allow ICM calculators to be run during live tournaments. You can use ICM Cruncher to calculate a good chop deal at a final table, but ICM can also help you play better by making better push/call/fold decisions in hands.

If you play poker tournaments of any kind, knowledge of ICM is essential for doing well especially as you get close to the bubble and into the money. This is especially true for small tournaments like Sit-n-Go's and satellites because you're in this situation very often.

Tournaments vs. Cash Games

Tournaments and cash games are very different as you approach the bubble or make it into the money. In cash games it's all about the chips. But in tournaments chips don't have fixed/constant value; you're trying to maximize your $ payout not your chips. This means you should not make decisions based on your chip equity or chip pot odds (that's cash game thinking), but on your $ payout equity and $ payout pot odds. ICM lets you do this by "converting" the players' chip stacks to expected $ payouts.

If you understand ICM you may (correctly) fold in a situation in a tournament where you'd (correctly) call if it was a cash game. Or you may push in a tournament situation (maybe even with any two cards) where you'd fold if it was a cash game.

Push/Call/Fold ICM Decision Analyzers

You input the starting chip stacks of the players, the payout structure, the bets that have gone into the pot, who the Villain and Hero (you) are, and some estimates like your equity against the Villain's range of hands and how often the Villain will call your all-in. (Our odds calculator PokerCruncher is a great way to calculate hand range equities.)

The analyzers calculate the ICM equities of various cases like: you fold, you call and win, you call and lose, Villain folds, etc. Then they put the results together and tell you which action is best and by how much. The call/fold analyzer also tells you what your breakeven equity is against the Villain's range of hands so you can estimate how good your hand must be to call.
